The Province of Alberta announced their approval of the modernization of the Grande Cache Community High School in support of Grande Yellowhead's 3 Year Capital Plan in January of 2014. The condition of the building, enrolment projections. utilization rates and program delivery as well as noted health and safety concerns were a few of the factors in the decision for the modernization. GCCHS was constructed in 1969 and was due for a modernization to meet the guidelines of barrier free access for students, and to increase its capacity for program delivery into the future. In May, the Board appointed The Workun Garrick Partnership Architecture & Interior Design Inc. as the architects for the Grande Cache modernization project and the plans were approved by GYPSD's Board of Trustees at the December 3, 2014 Public Board Meeting.
On January 21, 2015, Ministerial approval was received for an additional $300,000 from the Province and $1,500,000 from Grande Yellowhead Public School Division's undesignated funds toward the modernization of Grande Cache Community High bringing the total approved budget for its construction to $16.6 million. The Board of Trustees approved the lowest tender bid from Monteith Building Group in September of 2015 with an expected completion of the project scheduled for September of 2017.
PROJECT STATUS & UPDATES
August 23, 2017 - The final work is being completed on the full modernization project at Grande Cache Community High School! Exterior work is mostly completed with the construction area now cleaned up and new sod was installed over the summer months. The project was approved by the Province in January of 2014, and after the last three years of hard work, the community is very pleased with their modernized building which also houses their new community/ school library.
June 21, 2017 - Work on the remaining deficiencies is continuing with some being completed over the summer when school is out. The exterior masonry and stone work is nearing completion and the phenolic panels are being installed. The front entrance sidewalk is scheduled to be completed this week. The exterior construction area is being cleaned and the landscaping will be completed as weather permits.
May 17, 2017 - A final inspection was conducted on May 2nd, 2017 to identify any deficiencies. The school has now moved into their new administration area and student gathering area. A final coat of finish was also applied to the gym floor on May 2nd and required 10 days for the finish to cure. The new entrance will not be opened to the public until the exterior concrete sidewalk is finished, dependent upon weather. Outside work will continue as weather permits as well as noted deficiencies will continue to be addressed over the next few months.
April 19, 2017 - All of the interior finishing work is near completion and the installation of the gym flooring and polished concrete floor has begun. The next two weeks will mostly consist of close-out items and training for staff and maintenance personnel. We are targeting the end of April for substantial completion of this project with only seasonal work remaining, dependent on weather conditions.
March 15, 2017 - The new mechanical systems start-ups have begun and interior finishing work is well underway. Flooring, painting and millwork installations will be completed this month. Installation of the gym flooring and polished concrete floor has also started. The month of April will mostly consist of close-out items: fire alarm verification, air and water balancing, deficiencies and final cleaning. We are targeting the end of April for substantial completion and demobilization with only seasonal work remaining, which will be completed as the weather permits.
February 15, 2017 - The cement slab in the gathering area has been poured and trustees were impressed with the stained concrete floor design for the entry. The painting in the gym is almost completed with the hardwood flooring scheduled for installation in the first part of March. The office millwork is being installed and should be completed by the middle of February. The new mechanical system will be operational before the end of the month.
January 11, 2017 - The gym roof has been sealed, and the hallway and gathering area roof will be completed in 2 weeks. The gym floor was poured on January 6th and painting has started in the administration area and the masons have almost completed the new washrooms.
December 14, 2016 - Masonry and structural steel work is now completed. The gym roof installation is completed and exterior cladding work has started. The mechanical installations have begun on the mezzanine with the mechanical equipment lifted into place. The gym and gathering area concrete slabs are to be poured after the Christmas break.
November 23, 2016 - Masonry and structural steel is continuing and should be completed in November. The mezzanine slab has been poured allowing for the installation of the mechanical units.The roof and other building envelope activities have started with the goal of all roof work being completed in December.
October 19, 2016 - Exterior work continues on the GCCHS project with the installation of exterior lights and flag poles. Interior partition walls have been installed in the new administration office area and exterior block work on the new gymnasium and new entrance is in progress.
September 21, 2016 - The GCCHS project is continues to move ahead as Phase 2 and 4 were completed and turned over to the school on September 2, 2016. The library was completed at the end of August and staff moved into the new library the first week of September. The paving was completed on September 12, 2016 with landscaping to follow. Phase 5 footings (gymnaisum area) and foundation work and masonry work has started.
August 24, 2016 - Phase 3 was completed over the summer. Phase 2 and Phase 4 (library and classrooms) will be completed and handed over on August 26th, 2016. Classrooms 119 and 120 will be completed by September 2nd, 2016. The library is scheduled to move at the end of August. Phase 5 (gymnasium and administrative areas) footings and foundation work and masonry work has started. The majority of the site work including curbs, walks and paving will be completed by September 1st, 2016.
June 15, 2016 - Phase 3 was completed and turned over to the school on June 1, 2016. The school has moved Into the new classrooms and Is In the process of moving out of the two story section. Phase 2 of the project will start on June 15, 2016 and be completed by August 15, 2016. Over the summer the two story section will be demolished and construction of the new gym, administration area and main entrance will begin. Phase 4 which is the partial demolition of the existing gym and construction of the new library, has started and is scheduled for completion on September 1st. This is ahead of the original scheduled completion date for Phase 4 of October 1, 2016.
May 18, 2016 - Phase 3 is nearing completion. Painting and nearing are completed, and millwork installation began the week of May 9, 2016. Site fencing and sidewalk installation has started. Phase 3 ls scheduled for completion at the end of May.
April 20, 2016 - Phase 3 is atthe midpoint of construction with demolition completed and the finishing portion started. New wall construction and mechanical and electrical rough-ins are completed Drywalling was started the first week of April with painting and nearing scheduled for the end of April. Millwork and ceiling installation will follow the nearing and painting, and phase 3 is scheduled for completion at the end of May Phase 4 which is the partial demolition of the existing gym will start on May 1.
February 17, 2016 - The six modular classrooms have been completed and a deficiency inspection was conducted on January 26, 2016. The school has moved Classes into the modulars and construction on phase 3 of the project started on February 1, 2016. To accommodate the schools timetable phase 2 will be moved to the end of the project. Phase 3 includes the wood shop, home economics, beauty culture and science labs.
December 16, 2015 - Site meetings were held on November 17 and December 15, 2015. The concrete piles and footings for the modulars have been completed. The masonry fire wall and brick veneer have also been completed in preparation for the installation of the modulars. The modulars are scheduled to be installed with temporary mechanical, electrical, heat and power turned on before the Christmas break and will be completed and ready for occupancy by the end of January.
November 4, 2015 - A start up meeting was held on October 1, 2015. At this meeting, authority, lines of communication and procedures for change orders was discussed. The contractor has mobiliied on site, site fencing, sea cans, and construction trailers have been set up. Excavation olthe footprint for the modular classrooms has begun.
