Grand Trunk Modernization
Grand Trunk Project Moves into Construction Phase
GYPSD is excited to share a progress update on the modernization project at Grand Trunk.
Beginning in June 2023, construction of the modernized facility began.
During the different phases of construction, students will be relocated to other areas of the school plant.
Before each phase begins, staff, students, and families will receive information relevant to that phase from Principal Zadderey.
Lobstick Community Names Future K-12 School in Evansburg
As the modernization project at Grand Trunk High School continues in Evansburg, community members within the Lobstick Zone were invited to help decide the future name of the school - which will include the amalgamation of two elementary schools.
Based on input and feedback from stakeholders, the k-12 school will be called the Grand Trunk School when completed.

School Visioning Survey
In March 2021, Alberta Education approved design funding for the modernization of Grand Trunk to create a K – 12 school. GYPSD is working with Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure over the next few months to determine the full scope of the project, including the facility’s design and funding to ensure that it meets the future learning needs of the communities of Wildwood and Evansburg.
Our September 16, 2021, Community Visioning Session was a first step in the design process for the modernized K – 12 school.
This survey provides an opportunity to provide input for those that could not attend the in-person session. Before you complete the survey, please read the overview of the project parameters provided by Alberta Infrastructure for this modernization project. You might also be interested in reviewing some of the input on school design that was gathered during the 2018 Facilities Review process. Some of the key points from students, parents, staff and community are summarized here.
The questions in the survey are the same as those discussed at the in-person community
visioning session on September 16, 2021, at the School Visioning Workshop.
As you go through the survey questions, we want you to think about your vision for the
modernized K – 12 school at different times of the day, days of the week and seasons of the year. This is an opportunity to dream, think big and help create the vision for the modernized school.
Thank you for sharing your vision with us!
Survey is open until October 1, 2021.
September 20, 2021 - Good News Story
On March 10, 2021, the province announced that Grande Yellowhead Public School Division’s number one priority on the Three-Year Capital Plan was approved for design funding to support the consolidation of three schools - Grand Trunk High School, Evansview School in Evansburg, and Wildwood School in Wildwood - into one K – 12 school with a 500-student capacity at the current Grand Trunk High School site in Evansburg.
School Visioning Workshop - September 16, 2021
A design and visioning event for the public was held September 16th, from 6-9 pm, in the gymnasium at Grand Trunk High School. Attendees at the event had an opportunity to provide input into the vision for the amalgamated and modernized K-12 school through a series of ‘dreaming’ activities and conversations.
- The objectives of the event were to:
- provide information on the Government of Alberta’s requirements, conditions, and restrictions for the modernization of Grand Trunk
- create a space to hear issues to be addressed in future regarding the transition of students from Evansview School and Wildwood School to the modernized K – 12 school
- obtain input from participants on their vision for the modernized K – 12 school
- provide information on next steps in the modernization process, including the formation of a design team
The project is an Alberta Infrastructure managed project and will be delivered under the Design-Bid-Build method with only the design portion of the project approved at this time.
The design phase is geared to shifting Grand Trunk High School into a 515 capacity K – 12 school to serve students from the current schools in Evansburg and Wildwood.
Community Partnership/ Donation Meeting - September 9, 2021
On September 9, 2021, community members and local organizations are invited to a sponsorship/partner meeting at Grand Trunk High School at 7pm.
This is an exciting project for our Division and for our communities in the East end of GYPSD. Our Board is looking for partners interested in supporting our community fundraising goal of three (3) million dollars to address additional items above and beyond the provincial funds for the modernization – such as the identified need from community members for a second gym and an industrial-sized kitchen for school and community use. We see this as a unique opportunity to ensure the construction of an exceptional school site that further extends the world-class education GYPSD strives to provide.
