Wednesday Profile: International Women's Day

Posted on:

Wednesday, March 8, 2023, is International Women's Day where we globally recognize and celebrate women’s and girls’ social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. It’s also a time to raise awareness of the progress made towards achieving gender equality and the work remaining to be done. This year's theme is #EmbraceEquity. The aim of the IWD 2023 #EmbraceEquity campaign theme is to get the world talking about Why equal opportunities aren't enough. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.

Each year, there are effectively two different themes: one proposed as a campaign theme by the IWD website, which this year is #EmbraceEquity, and the official theme of the UN observance of the day, which this year is 'DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality'. The UN will celebrate women and girls who are "championing the advancement of transformative technology and digital education" as well as exploring the impact of the digital gender gap on widening economic and social inequalities.

International Women's Day is a reminder that all women, from all ages and walks of life, have a place in every aspect of Canadian society, including in the economic, social and democratic spheres. Let’s celebrate the successful women around us, reminding today’s youth and girls that their dream is within reach.
