GNS: Food Explorers
Posted on:Mrs. Walker and Miss Marshall's Junior-Kindergarten-Grade 2 students are learning about nutrition and cooking from a program called "Food Explorers", sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Canada. Students discover the mysteries of taste, texture, and colour of various food groups. Materials and resources to support students from early learning to high school are available on the Teach Nutrition website. Children are encouraged to try new nutritious food with a few simple steps- guessing the food, cooking the food, and trying the food. The program comes with multiple copies of each recipe card, so that the students can take the recipe home and share it with their families.
Lately, Mrs. Walker's students have been making recipes in the "bread" family and Miss Marshall's class has been experimenting with potatoes. There are lots of units to choose from: dairy, meat, eggs, bread, rice, potatoes, and yogurt. Exploring food encourages children to learn through sensory experiences, hands-on activities and working together to create delicious results. By combining nutrition education with cooking and hands-on food exploration, the Fulham community will have a dedicated group of Food Explorers in no time!
