GNS: Annual Indigenous Education Event
Posted on:GYPSD's Annual Indigenous Education Event was held on April 7 and 8, and brought together 60 guests and presenters, cultivating a vibrant twoday collaborative learning community centred on insights from Indigenous peoples in community with invited Elders.
The event was carefully crafted to benefit GYPSD students and their families, teachers, leaders, and support staff. Jasper Jr./Sr. High School and Forest Park Hotel, both located in Jasper National Park, were chosen as the event venues to reflect our commitment to honouring Indigenous perspectives and histories while acknowledging the complexities of our shared history. We believe that by recognizing and understanding the past, we can move forward in a spirit of kindness, empathy, and unity, working together for the betterment of all.
Attendees appreciated the wealth of knowledge shared by language holders, knowledge keepers, teachers, and community supporters of child and youth initiatives and programs. For example, Matricia Bauer of Warrior Women enthralled participants with teachings about the mountains, Grandfather Rock, and a captivating solar eclipse story that coincided with the main event.
The GYPSD's Indigenous Pathways Leadership Team extends its gratitude to all who attended and participated in this year's event. The journey toward reconciliation is a collective effort, reminding us that authentic learning, unlearning, and reconciliation occur within the community, benefiting our present and future students, their families, and our communities.
