Grande Yellowhead schools hosted several cultural activities, traditions, and learnings of the Métis people in recognition of Métis Week acknowledged November 10-16th.
Mrs. Johnston’s Grade 1 students at Mary Bergeron Elementary in Edson participated in a Métis virtual field trip focused on Michif songs and language, guided by Mrs. Davenport. The students were introduced to the unique aspects of the Michif language through traditional songs and an interactive language lesson. Mrs. Dahl shared with Mrs. Reynolds’ Kindergarten students a collection of her traditional items with the students and discussed their significance in Métis culture. Afterward, the students participated in making bannock, a traditional First Nations bread. They eagerly measured and mixed the ingredients, but the highlight of their day was tasting their delicious creations!
Some of the students at Crescent Valley School in Hinton learned the Red River Jig as part of their celebrations as well as learning about Métis language (Michif), food, and the Métis sash and its significance to Métis culture. They also created a school-wide bulletin board with Métis culture written out in English, French and Michif!
