GNS Family Literacy Day

Posted on:

Family Literacy Day takes place every January 27th to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family.

ABC creates free learning and promotional resources including a free activity book for anyone that wants to get involved. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well. This year’s theme is focused on pledging as a family to learn ways to be more green. Use less electricity, commute together, and reuse items. Being green together is a fun way to learn as a family while being kind to the environment.

Did you know that children whose parents are involved with them in family literacy activities score 10 points higher on standardized reading tests? Activities can be as easy as reading or making up a story together, playing a board game, or reading signs while riding in the car.

GYPSD schools embrace a number of different strategies, learning resources, and fun activities to encourage students to read, read, read, and part of their focus is encouraging parents to assist with this goal outside of the school day. Principal Debra Boos at École Westhaven School in Edson has recently created a literacy newsletter showcasing how families can get involved and help the school towards their three-year vision noted in their School's Continuous Improvement Plan that 100% of their students will read at, or above, grade level before the end of Grade 5.
