GNS Deepening our Understanding of Indigenous Culture

Posted on:

The Grande Yellowhead Public School Divison (GYPSD) Indigenous Pathways Lead Teachers came together for an inspiring day of learning, reflection, and cultural appreciation. Teachers were honoured to welcome Knowledge Keeper Jason Bigcharles who shared personal stories that resonated deeply with all. Jason is a proud Métis from the Métis Settlement of East Prairie; his family is also deeply rooted in Cree cultural practice and spiritualism.

Jason's wisdom and insight enriched the group's understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and traditions. He shared the importance of passing on knowledge to future generations. Participants had the unique opportunity to engage in meaningful protocols and explore the Four Directions by hand-making Wepinason - a sacred offering to use in connecting with Elders and Knowledge Keepers.

Lead teachers are incredibly grateful for this experience and excited to continue learning from Jason at the GYPSD Annual Indigenous Education Event which is scheduled for April 14 and 15, 2025, in Jasper, AB. Jason is also one of the keynote speakers at the upcoming 2025 CASS First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Education Gathering.
