GNS: Community Partners Visit Board

Posted on:

At the January 25, 2023, Public Board Meeting, the Board heard from important community organizations who shared some valuable resources and programming opportunities to support the learning and growth of GYPSD students.

Edson Friendship Centre Executive Director Kristie Gomuwka, Elder Valerie Findlay, and Culture Coordinator Renay Woelfing, shared a video the centre created to capture local perspectives on Reconciliation and intergenerational trauma in their work to inform community understanding and healing.

General Manager Nancy Robbins, and Community Economic Development/RRRF Coordinator Heather Cokes from Community Futures - West Yellowhead, presented information on two key youth entrepreneurship programs: Lemonade Day and the Young Entrepreneurs Training Initiative (YETI) which is being brought into the Yellowhead district for this summer. Lemonade Day is a free, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own and operate their own business – a lemonade stand. Participants learn how to create budgets, set profit-making goals, serve customers, repay investors, and give back to the community. Launched in 2015, YETI is an annual locally-focused, high-speed business training initiative for senior high-school teens. With startup cash, resources, and guidance from Community Futures staff and community partners, youth turn their business ideas into reality over the eight weeks of summer - and well into the future!

Kindergarten students from Crescent Valley introduced the Board to words and numbers they have learned in Cree, Michif, and Sauteaux. Indigenous Languages and Cultures teacher Landis Roan, Principal Ryan Maghun, Kindergarten teacher Ms. Natalie Okoli, and three proud moms also joined the delegation to celebrate the ILC program.
