GNS: Early Learners from Westhaven Entertain the Board of Trustees

Posted on:

The Board of Trustees were entertained by some talented guests at the Public Board Meeting on February 15, 2023.

Kindergarten and Grade One students from École Westhaven in Edson to showcase some of their learning projects. Students from the school's Montessori program with their teacher, Mrs. Thompson, shared about their rainbow fish project. Kindergarten French Immersion students demonstrated how they start their mornings led by their teacher, Ms. Stanton.

Westhaven is a JK to Grade 5 school in Edson that proudly offers both English and French Immersion programs from kindergarten to Grade 5, as well as a junior kindergarten program for 3 and 4 year olds. This is also their second year of providing a unique learning option in the Division - the Montessori Method. Westhaven is the only rural public school in Alberta to offer the program - outside of the urban centres - something that Principal Boos, a former educator for several years in a Montessori school in BC is very proud of.

The first priority of the Board is student learning, and over the past 15 years, GYPSD’s Board of Trustees has heavily subsidized the expense of providing a full week, full day kindergarten program at the request of their families – a significant cost as the province only funds this important early learning program as a half day program.

Registration for September 2023 is now open for both junior kindergarten and kindergarten programs at your local school.
