GNS: Jasper High's Commitment to Literacy
Posted on:With reading comprehension a focus of their school-based goals this year, it’s easy to find reasons to shout out the staff and students of Jasper Junior Senior High School and their dedication to literacy. Evidence of their commitment to literacy permeates their spaces and practices. Here are a few examples from the school:
-
during his anticipatory sets, Mr. Barker has focused on highlighting word origins, prefixes, root words, and suffixes in his Junior and Senior High Science courses
-
in partnership with Literacy Consultant, Irene Heffel, Ms. Cross has developed a reading comprehension strategy menu board to build literacy for her English, Social Studies, and Foods students
-
Madame Bissonette is developing a working word wall for her students to reference in her Junior High French Immersion Math and Science classes
-
Mrs. Currie and Ms. Gerhardt infuse daily reading comprehension strategies supporting Blooms Taxonomy in their Junior High ELA classes
-
Ms. Kayla has used inspiration from the book Braided Sweetgrass to connect literacy with Science and FMNI concepts
-
the Junior High students demonstrated their love of literacy by bringing in a childhood favourite or sharing one of the many new picture books added to the school library on Family Literacy Day, January 27th
-
spear-headed by author and former teacher, Paulette Blanchette-Dubé, and along with other Jasper residents, Madame Helene, Mrs, Currie, and Mr. Brady’s English classes contributed to a community poetry project called “Home”. It will be displayed in the Habitat for the Arts Building.
