Wednesday Profile: Celebrating Indigenous History and Culture
Posted on:June 21, 2023: Schools across the Division have scheduled numerous activities and events in recognition of National Indigenous History Month, as well as on June 21, 2023, National Indigenous Peoples Day.
To recognize the important histories, cultures, and contributions of the Indigenous peoples in Grande Cache, Principal John Hammer organized a community day and shared the following:
“In partnership with local Indigenous groups and organizations, including Aseniwuche Winewak Group of Companies, Mountain Metis, Youth Action Club, Grande Cache Community Learning & Employment Resource Center, Grande Cache Family & Community Support Services, drummers with the James Gang Band, and local dancers, Grande Cache students, staff, and community celebrated National Indigenous History Month.
All three Grande Cache schools, including Grande Cache Community High School, Summitview School, and Sheldon Coates Elementary School, came together to celebrate with community members, Elders, leaders, and mentors.
We enjoyed a bannock burger and hot dog BBQ, dancing, a mini Round Dance, and presentations about different aspects of Indigenous history and cultures.
Presentations included horse packing and outfitting with Curtis Hallock from Indian Trail Adventures, hide processing with Danika Gill, and Inuit traditional clothing with Lane Weislein.
Thank you to everyone involved for the support! It was a beautiful day full of pride, fun, community, and celebration."
