GNS: Indigenous Star Quilts at CVS

Grade 3 students at Crescent Valley in Hinton were busyover the past few weeks preparing to honor Indigenous History Month. Learners have been evaluating Indigenous quilting styles, as well as protocols related to how these artworks were built/shared, in order to plan, create and design their own meaningful Indigenous Star Quilts. To add excitement to learning, students used coding to reconstruct their hand-created artwork on Chromebooks.

The focus of the Indigenous Star Quilt design and coding project has been on exploring and understanding the diverse and intricate artwork found within the cultures of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. The use of computer coding (interactive educational tools/multimedia resources) greatly enhanced student involvement and interest.

Learners began the Indigenous Star Quilt project by analyzing the context (including geographical, historical, cultural) and meaning of Indigenous quilting works. Students also tackled the big idea that art is valued for various reasons including aesthetic appeal, economic significance, and symbolic meanings. The final, beautiful student creations speak for the success of the Indigenous Star Quilt project!
