GNS: Métis Week

Posted on:

Métis Week was November 12 to 18, 2023, and was recognized in various ways across the Division.
At Mary Bergeron Elementary in Edson, Mrs. Williams’ Grade 4 students learned about Métis culture and values by listening to The Giving Tree, A Traditional Metis Story. The story emphasizes kindness, sharing, patience, and tolerance within Métis culture. Then, the students created their own "Giving Trees” to represent those important values.

Mrs. Locke's Grade 9 Social Studies class at Parkland Composite High School in Edson studied Métis history, culture, and collective rights by watching videos, listening to Ted Talks, and doing research on Métis people of influence such as Louis Riel and MP Blake Desjarlais of the Edmonton Griesbach riding.

Students at Crescent Valley School in Hinton did a number of cultural activities including reading The Red Sash and learning the Métis art of finger weaving and its importance of the sash to the Métis.
