Career Path: Agriculture
Posted on:Youth and young farmers are the future of Canada's agriculture and agri-food sector. GYPSD has many students interested in pursuing an agriculture-related field and Grand Trunk High School (GTHS) in Evansburg is one of our high schools proud to offer a suite of the Alberta Career and Technology Studies agriculture courses for students. These courses give students the opportunity to explore and gain an understanding of the diversity and significance of agriculture in Alberta.
Two GTHS students are doing Career Internships this year at Mayerthorpe Veterinary Services. Career Internship is a workplace-based curriculum designed to assist senior high school students in making informed decisions about their transitions from high school to post-secondary and/or the workplace. Career Internship is for students who want to focus on learning about a specific career or occupational field that they have an interest in.
Ten GTHS students are also enrolled in the Green Certificate Program exploring Cow-Calf Beef Technician, Equine Technician, Poultry Technician, and the Sheep Technician programs. The Green Certificate Program is an apprenticeship-style training program in the agriculture industry. Students select a specialization and under the guidance of their trainer, work towards mastering all of the skills within their training program. This is the tenth year that Agriculture in the Classroom Canada has recognized March as Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month!
