GNS: Exploring the Trades for Future Careers

Niton Central School grade 6-9 students participated in the Skills Exploration Day for the 4th
consecutive year on December 5th. Jr. High Schools from all across the province participated in the event put on by Skills Alberta to:
- Inspire Junior High students to identify inherent skills and interests.
- Connect students’ skills and interests to trade and technology careers through interactive, hands-on experiences that promote creativity, empathy, and exploration.
- Promote trade and technology careers as a valuable and rewarding career choice.
This year's Skills Competition was based on innovations in Water Conservation and Sustainable Usage. Students planned and designed their prototypes using a human-centred design process. Using skills from a variety of trades such as Carpentry, HVAC, Plumbing, Fashion Design, and Electrical.
At Niton Central School, students competed with their designs and several skills challenges within specific trades, creating a zippered bag (fashion technology), a logo for an animal shelter(graphic design), a pinwheel and sheet metal cano (HVAC) a Squirrel picnic table (woodworking), a pipefitting challenge (plumbing), and a solar panel challenge (electrical).
The 1st place group (Myla Morden, Jayla Van Dyk, and Serena Dunsdon-Grant) created a system for collecting and spraying rainwater. The 2nd place group (Tristin Bauman, Dustin Defoor, Dominic Bacan, and Cole Moman) designed the undersink water purification boiler system. An additional prize for the best working prototype was the filtering and recirculation of household drain water went to Abby Clark and Taylor Kennedy.
